Uckermark - Tuscany of the North?
image author: Frank Preuß Tuscany of the North ?
The Uckermark is sometimes described as Tuscany of the North. Do you know why ?
Take a look at the place or use the Internet and these pages, compare them, a few first signals can be found here.
What determines Tuscany ?
"central Italy, consisting of hills and mountains, bordering on Latium and the west coast, capital Florence", so described in my encyclopaedia. A little short and very general. But here we have the first criterion that fits the Uckermark especially: hilly landscape. These hills are really distinguished and one of the reasons why people who know and love the Uckermark appreciate it so much.
image author: Frank Preuß Don't these hills have something comforting yes even motherly?
Isn't it fantastic to drive steeply down from Herrenhof, direction east into the plains of the Welsebruch, cross this absolute plain just to gain height again at Jamikow ?
Or to swing from the motorway exit Pfingstberg through the area in the direction of Gerswalde ?
Or to walk along the idyllic little street from Groß-Kölpin to Friedenfelde ?
image author: Thomas Ebel You will say wine belongs to Tuscany just as to the whole of Italy. Does the Uckermark have wine ? You will find three 'mountains' on the map that are called vineyard. But there is no wine. Wine you will find at the Bio-farmer Thomas Ebel in the Boitzenburger Land. Not masses but moderation, which is better as we health-conscious Germans know.

image author: Frau Brachmann In the meantime I met Frau Brachmann from Steinrode at the Boitzenburger Land, a designated expert in evaluating of countryside.
She is a painter, has lived for years in the Uckermark, travelled a lot and has been to
Tuscany often, which she loves very much.
She detected similarities between the two landscapes immediately when she came to Uckermark. She says, the hills, the trees here poplars not cypresses, the colours all that entitles to call the Uckermark the Tuscany of the north.
Further pictures (also from Tuscany) are available at her
Homepage or at her gallery in Steinrode. The gallery is open Saturdays 1pm - 4pm or by arrangement.
